In order to sub-divide the great mass of kachina dolls into more comprehensible units an effort has been made to group them by function. However, the separation of kachinas into classes is to a great extent an arificial system. As one student of the Hopi observed, "While any Hopi can describein detail the costumes, songs, dance steps of a great number of kachinas, he remains comfortable vague on the subject of their relation to the forces of the universe, the nature of their power and the fate of the soul after death.
